Google’s sibling Waymo is focusing on robo-taxis instead of autonomous trucking.

According to Yole Intelligence, Chinese passenger car OEMs and robotaxi technology companies are driving the automotive lidar market, which is expected to grow globally to about $4.5 billion in 2028.

Its Commercial Vehicles unit is using a fleet of self-driving prototypes based on the ID. Buzz on German roads with ridesharing subsidiary MOIA, with simultaneous testing of identical prototypes in North America aimed at external mobility and transport sector companies.

The new autonomous bus is planned to save more than 660 gallons of gas per year and decrease carbon dioxide by 13,021 pounds annually.

Since June 16, the robotaxi that operates without a steering wheel and pedals has been autonomously carrying company employees in Las Vegas, marking another big step toward commercial launch.

Autonomous electric mini-buses will operate as public transport in downtown Châteauroux starting in 2026.

Later this year, autonomous Waymo vehicles will be available via Uber apps in Phoenix.

The pilot is globally significant and marks a step change in the operation of autonomous commercial vehicles on public roads, says Jim Hutchinson, CEO of Fusion Processing, the company providing the automated drive system.

The new findings may help other autonomous vehicles and systems communicate with people to improve safety.
