Carmakers now have the ability to decide where drivers can safely use their vehicles’ automated functions.
With the new TomTom RoadCheck, car manufacturers can use the company’s high definition map to define the operational design domain for automated driving functions, according to a news release. They can manage where functions can be used safely so drivers avoid situations where automated driving might be hindered, such as during harsh weather, in tunnels and in construction areas.
“By enabling carmakers to control where automated driving functions can be activated, TomTom is addressing a critical industry challenge that has been highlighted by our partners and customers,” TomTom Head of Autonomous Driving Willem Strijbosch said, according to the release. “TomTom RoadCheck—an industry first technology—will make safe autonomous driving a reality sooner.”
RoadCheck offers a complete mapping service for automated driving. It’s expected to be deployed by a leading global carmaker in 2021.
