Hyundai Motor Company has unveiled a campaign film showcasing the IONIQ 5 robotaxi’s successful completion of a driver’s license test, an event that mirrors the actual U.S. driving examination process. This initiative demonstrates the safety, reliability, and inclusivity of Hyundai’s AI-based autonomous driving technology, developed in collaboration with Motional, aimed at providing mobility freedom for all.
The film features Pearl Outlaw, a visually impaired woman, and her mother, Ruth, highlighting the life-changing potential of autonomous driving technology for individuals with physical impairments. Pearl, who cannot obtain a driver’s license due to her condition, represents many who could gain independence and freedom through advancements in autonomous vehicle technology.
Kandice Jones, a DMV Certified Driving Examiner with 25 years of experience, conducted the test for the IONIQ 5 robotaxi. Jones remarked on the similarity between evaluating human drivers and the robotaxi, emphasizing the importance of speed control, lane changes, complete stops, and reaction times during the test. The IONIQ 5 robotaxi impressed with its capabilities, navigating the bustling streets of Las Vegas, including the Strip and suburban areas, with ease.
The collaboration between Hyundai Motor Group and autonomous driving technology developer Motional has yielded the IONIQ 5 robotaxi, a vehicle that embodies the pinnacle of mobility technology. Equipped with an advanced sensor suite, including LiDAR, radar, and cameras, the robotaxi is capable of consistent performance across a variety of driving environments.
Sungwon Jee, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer at Hyundai Motor Company, expressed the company’s commitment to advancing autonomous driving technology. “Through this campaign, we aim to demonstrate the safety and trustworthiness of the IONIQ 5 robotaxi. Our efforts will continue to highlight our AI-based technology’s potential to positively impact our customers’ daily lives,” said Jee.
This campaign not only showcases the technological achievements of Hyundai and its partners but also underscores the broader impact of autonomous vehicles on society, offering enhanced mobility solutions to those who need them most.
